Who can do an NTT course?

By APTTI Educational Content · Updated · 2 min read

Anyone who wants to teach or care for young children can do an NTT course, as long as they meet the level's entry requirement. At APTTI the Certificate is open after 10th, the Diploma after 12th and the PG Diploma after graduation. Learners include school leavers, graduates, mothers returning to work, playschool owners, teaching assistants and teachers moving into the early years.

What this means in practice

There is no single type of NTT learner. Some want their first job; others already work in a preschool and need a formal qualification; others plan to open a playschool. Online study suits people who are working or caring for a family because they can study in their own time.

Common reasons people take NTT

  • Starting a career in a preschool or playschool
  • Moving from primary or secondary teaching into the early years
  • Getting a qualification for a job already being done
  • Opening or running a playschool or day-care centre
  • Understanding their own young children better
  • Preparing for early-years work abroad

Personal qualities that matter

Patience, warmth, energy, clear speech and a sense of humour matter as much as grades. Nursery children need adults who stay calm, notice small changes and enjoy play. Good written English helps with planning and parent communication, especially in English-medium schools and abroad.

Matching the course to your situation

If you are still at school, the Certificate gives you an early start. If you have finished 12th, the Diploma prepares you for class teacher roles. If you are a graduate, the PG Diploma matches your level and suits coordinator or international ambitions.

If you run or plan a playschool, choose a level deep enough to cover curriculum planning and safety. If you are a parent learning for your own family, any level works, but the Certificate is the lightest commitment.

What to do next

  1. Check your highest qualification against the course levels.
  2. Think about the hours you can study each week.
  3. Spend a morning in a nursery class to confirm you enjoy it.
  4. Apply for the level that matches your education.
ExampleFarida, 34, has a B.Com and two children. She takes the PG Diploma online in the evenings and starts as an assistant teacher in a playschool near her home before moving to a class teacher role.

What to keep in mind

Eligibility to enrol is not the same as eligibility for every job. Government posts and some countries have their own rules, so check them separately.
