What is a playschool and how is it different from a nursery school?
A playschool is a small early-years setting, often privately run, for children aged about 18 months to 4 that focuses on play, social skills and settling into a group. A nursery school usually covers ages 3 to 6 (nursery, LKG, UKG) with a more structured programme leading to Grade 1. Many settings combine both, and the terms are often used loosely.
What this means in practice
Playschools often run shorter hours and are a child's first experience away from home. Nursery schools and school pre-primary sections are more likely to follow a curriculum with term plans and assessments. Day-care centres add full-day care for working parents.
Key differences
- Age: playschool from about 1.5 to 4; nursery school from about 3 to 6
- Hours: playschools often 2 to 4 hours; day care longer
- Programme: playschools focus on play and social skills; nursery schools add early literacy and numeracy
- Ownership: playschools are often independent or franchise-run
What this means for teachers
Playschool teachers need strong care, settling and play skills. Nursery school teachers also need curriculum planning and assessment skills. An NTT or ECCE course prepares you for both.
Choosing a playschool as a teacher or parent
- Is the space clean, safe and bright?
- Are adults on the floor playing with children?
- Is there a clear daily routine?
- Are group sizes small, with an assistant for younger children?
- Are toilets child-sized and supervised?
- Do staff have early-years training?
- How does the setting communicate with parents?
What to do next
- Visit both types of setting.
- Ask about group sizes and staff ratios.
- Choose training that covers the age group you will work with.
What to keep in mind
Registration and licensing for playschools vary by state and country. If you plan to open one, check local rules.
