What is pre-primary education?
Pre-primary education is organised learning for children in the years before Grade 1, usually from about age 3 to 6. In India it means nursery, LKG and UKG (now also called Balvatika). It focuses on play-based learning, language, early numeracy, motor skills and social skills, so children are ready for primary school.
What this means in practice
Pre-primary education is now part of the school system in India: NEP 2020 brought ages 3 to 6 into the foundational stage, and many government schools have started Balvatika classes. Private schools have run pre-primary sections for decades.
What children do in pre-primary classes
- Rhymes, songs, stories and conversation
- Phonics awareness and early mark-making
- Counting, sorting, patterns and shapes
- Art, craft, music and movement
- Outdoor play and free play in learning corners
- Routines that build independence
Who teaches pre-primary
Pre-primary teachers with NTT, PPTT, ECCE or Montessori training. Many schools also employ assistants or ayahs who support care routines. Government posts need NCTE-recognised training; private schools set their own requirements.
Pre-primary and school readiness
School readiness is more than knowing letters. Children who are ready for Grade 1 can usually follow simple instructions, manage personal care, take turns, express needs, concentrate for short periods and enjoy books.
Pre-primary teachers build these skills through routines, play and gradually longer focused activities. Sharing these goals with parents helps reduce pressure for early written homework.
What to do next
- Learn the pre-primary structure in your state or board.
- Train in a pre-primary or NTT course.
- Build a resource bank of activities by theme.
What to keep in mind
Pre-primary is about readiness, not finishing the primary syllabus early. Avoid homework-heavy approaches that the NCF-FS advises against.
