What is the difference between nursery, LKG and UKG?

By APTTI Educational Content · Updated · 2 min read

Nursery, LKG and UKG are the three pre-primary years in most Indian schools. Nursery is for children of about 3 to 4 and focuses on settling, play and talk. LKG (Lower Kindergarten, 4 to 5) adds more structured early literacy and number work. UKG (Upper Kindergarten, 5 to 6) prepares children for Grade 1 with phonics, early reading, writing readiness and number sense.

What this means in practice

Each year builds on the previous one, and the teacher's job changes with it. Nursery teachers spend more time on care and routines; UKG teachers plan more focused small-group work while keeping learning playful. Under NEP 2020 these years are also called Balvatika.

Typical focus by year

  • Nursery: settling in, rhymes, sensory play, colours, shapes, listening, self-help skills
  • LKG: letter sounds, mark-making, counting to 20, patterns, simple stories
  • UKG: blending sounds, simple words, writing readiness, numbers to 100, simple addition through objects, independence

Teaching tips for each class

Keep nursery activities short and hands-on. In LKG, introduce routines for small groups. In UKG, build stamina gradually and use games for practice. In all three years, talk, play and stories remain the main tools.

Moving children between years

Transitions between nursery, LKG and UKG go more smoothly when teachers share observation notes, children visit their next classroom and the new teacher keeps some familiar routines for the first weeks.

Parents often worry when a child moves to a more structured class. Explain what will change and what stays the same, and invite them to a short orientation.

What to do next

  1. Find out the age cut-offs your school uses.
  2. Map your year's goals before planning activities.
  3. Coordinate with the teachers before and after you.
ExampleA school in Hyderabad renames its classes Balvatika 1, 2 and 3 but keeps the same play-based programme, with phonics games increasing in UKG.

What to keep in mind

Names and age cut-offs differ between states and boards, so always check local admission rules.
