What age group do nursery teachers teach?

By APTTI Educational Content · Updated · 2 min read

Nursery teachers usually teach children aged about 2 to 6. In India that covers playgroup (around 2 to 3), nursery (3 to 4), LKG (4 to 5) and UKG (5 to 6). Under NEP 2020 these years form most of the foundational stage, which runs from age 3 to 8 and includes three years of preschool or Balvatika before Grades 1 and 2.

What this means in practice

Age bands differ by school, state and country, so check the class structure where you plan to work. In British-curriculum schools in the Gulf, for example, FS1 and FS2 cover roughly ages 3 to 5. In Kenya the equivalent is PP1 and PP2.

Class names by system

  • India: Playgroup, Nursery, LKG, UKG (or Balvatika 1 to 3)
  • British curriculum (EYFS): Nursery/FS1, Reception/FS2
  • American curriculum: Pre-K and Kindergarten
  • Kenya: PP1 and PP2 (pre-primary)
  • Nigeria: Creche, Nursery 1 and 2, sometimes KG

Why the age band matters for teaching

A two-year-old and a five-year-old are very different learners. Two-year-olds need care routines, short activities and lots of sensory play. Five-year-olds can follow multi-step instructions, start reading simple words and work in small groups. A good NTT course teaches you to plan for each band.

Planning across the age bands

  • Ages 2 to 3: care routines, sensory play, simple words and songs, very short group times
  • Ages 3 to 4: rhymes, pretend play, sorting, early mark-making, beginning to share
  • Ages 4 to 5: letter sounds, counting objects, group games with rules, longer stories
  • Ages 5 to 6: blending sounds, simple writing, numbers to 20 and beyond, independence for Grade 1

What to do next

  1. Learn the class names used in schools you are targeting.
  2. Study typical development for each year from 2 to 6.
  3. Adapt activity length: about one minute per year of age is a useful rough guide for focused group time.
  4. Plan more movement for younger groups.
ExampleA teacher moving from LKG to playgroup shortens circle time to ten minutes, adds more sensory trays and builds the day around snack, play and rest.

What to keep in mind

Age is only a guide. Children develop at different rates, so plan for the children in front of you rather than the age on the register.

Common follow-up questions

What is the age for nursery admission in India?

Many schools admit to nursery at about 3, with rules that vary by state and board. Check the local admission notice.

Do nursery teachers teach Grade 1?

Usually not. Grades 1 and 2 are taught by primary teachers, although they are part of the foundational stage.
