What is early childhood education?
Early childhood education is the care and learning of children from birth to about 8 years old, before and in the first years of formal school. It covers language, thinking, physical, social and emotional development, and it works mainly through play, relationships and everyday routines. In India it is called ECCE, Early Childhood Care and Education.
What this means in practice
Research summarised by UNICEF and Harvard's Center on the Developing Child shows that the early years are when the brain develops fastest, and that responsive relationships and stimulating play build the foundations for later learning. That is why NEP 2020 makes universal access to quality ECCE a national goal.
The main areas of development
- Physical: gross and fine motor skills, health and nutrition
- Language and communication, including home language
- Cognitive: curiosity, problem-solving, early number
- Social and emotional: relationships, self-control, confidence
- Creative: art, music, movement and pretend play
Where early childhood education happens
In India: anganwadis, government preschools and Balvatikas, private playschools, nursery schools and school pre-primary sections. Abroad: nurseries, kindergartens, ECD centres and Foundation Stage classes. Parents and families are part of early education too.
What good early childhood education looks like
Look for warm adults who know each child, small groups, plenty of play materials, time outdoors, stories and conversation every day, predictable routines and close contact with families. Children should be busy, talking and choosing, not sitting silently with worksheets.
NCF-FS 2022 describes goals across physical development, socio-emotional development, cognitive development, language and literacy, aesthetic and cultural development, and positive learning habits.
What to do next
- Read the foundational stage section of NEP 2020.
- Look at NCF-FS 2022 for India's early-years goals.
- Observe children at play and note what they are learning.
- Consider an ECCE or NTT course if you want to work in the field.
What to keep in mind
Early education is not an earlier start on school worksheets. Pushing formal reading and writing too early can harm motivation; play-based approaches are recommended.
