What skills does a nursery teacher need?
A nursery teacher needs patience, warmth and clear communication, plus practical skills: planning play-based activities, managing a group of young children, observing development, storytelling and singing, basic first aid and hygiene, and talking with parents. Good spoken English helps in English-medium schools. Most of these skills can be learned through training and practice.
What this means in practice
Employers often say they hire for attitude and train for skill. In an interview, a nursery teacher may be asked to sing a rhyme, tell a story or explain how they would settle a crying child, so practical confidence matters.
Core skills
- Planning short, hands-on activities
- Classroom routines and positive behaviour guidance
- Observation and simple record-keeping
- Storytelling, rhymes, songs and movement
- Early phonics and number activities
- Health, safety and first aid awareness
- Parent communication, in person and in writing
- Basic digital skills for school apps and photos
Personal qualities
Patience, calmness under noise, creativity, reliability, empathy and enthusiasm. Children also benefit from adults who model kindness and curiosity.
How training builds these skills
A good NTT course gives you frameworks you can use immediately: how to write a short activity plan, how to observe and record, how to set up learning corners, how to handle common behaviour and how to keep children safe.
Assignments that ask you to plan and reflect on real activities turn knowledge into confidence. Keep a personal file of your best plans and resources; it becomes your toolkit for the first year of teaching.
What to do next
- List the skills you have and the ones you lack.
- Practise five rhymes and three stories until you know them by heart.
- Take a first-aid course.
- Train in child development and classroom management.
- Record yourself reading aloud and improve your pace and expression.
What to keep in mind
Skills grow with feedback. Ask a senior teacher to observe you and give specific suggestions.
