Can I do an NTT course without teaching experience?
Yes. You do not need teaching experience to join an NTT course at Certificate, Diploma or PG Diploma level. APTTI states that you can apply without experience; only some advanced courses need it. Experience still helps you get a job afterwards, so try to volunteer or observe in a preschool while you study.
What this means in practice
Most NTT learners are new to teaching. The course gives you the theory and planning skills; real classrooms give you confidence. Combining both makes your applications much stronger.
How to gain experience while studying
- Volunteer at a local playschool or anganwadi
- Assist at a children's activity centre or summer camp
- Run a storytelling or craft session in your community
- Observe classes with a school's permission
- Tutor neighbours' young children
What to record
Keep a simple log: date, setting, age group, what you did and what you learned. Save lesson plans and photos of resources (not children's faces without permission). This becomes your portfolio.
Your first weeks in a classroom
Expect the first weeks to feel busy. Watch how experienced teachers handle arrival, transitions and snack time, and ask if you can lead a song or story each day.
Note what works and what does not. By the end of your course, these notes and your assignments will show employers that you have both training and practical exposure.
What to do next
- Apply for the level that matches your education.
- Arrange regular volunteering.
- Build a portfolio as you go.
What to keep in mind
Safeguarding rules apply to volunteers too. Expect background checks, and never be alone with children without the setting's agreement.
Common follow-up questions
Will I get a job without experience after NTT?
Many schools hire freshly trained assistants; some want experience for class teacher roles.
Does the course include internship?
Assignments are practical; ask admissions about any supervised practice requirement for your level.
