NTT vs Montessori teacher training: which is better?

By APTTI Educational Content · Updated · 2 min read

Neither is better overall; they suit different goals. NTT trains you for nursery teaching across approaches, including play-based and structured activities used in most Indian preschools. Montessori training focuses on Maria Montessori's method: a prepared environment, specific materials and child-led work. Choose Montessori if you want to work in Montessori schools; NTT for general preschools. At APTTI both have the same levels and fees.

What this means in practice

Many preschools in India describe themselves as Montessori-inspired, so Montessori ideas are useful even outside strict Montessori schools.

Key differences

  • Approach: NTT is broad and eclectic; Montessori follows one method
  • Classroom: NTT settings are teacher-planned; Montessori classrooms use self-correcting materials and mixed ages
  • Teacher role: NTT teacher leads activities; Montessori teacher (directress) observes and guides
  • Jobs: NTT for most preschools; Montessori for Montessori schools and inspired settings

Same fees, same levels at APTTI

Both offer Certificate (10th, 120 hours, ₹10,000 + GST), Diploma (12th, 200 hours, ₹20,000 + GST) and PG Diploma (graduation, 240 hours, ₹30,000 + GST).

Combining approaches in practice

Many Indian preschools use a blend: Montessori-style practical life and sensorial materials in the morning, theme-based group activities and play later. Teachers trained in either approach can learn the other on the job, and understanding both makes you more adaptable.

What to do next

  1. Visit a Montessori school and a regular preschool.
  2. Check job adverts you want.
  3. Choose the course that matches.
ExampleAmrita prefers calm, child-led classrooms, so she takes Montessori training and joins a Montessori house in Bangalore.

What to keep in mind

Strict Montessori schools may require training from a specific association. Check before enrolling.
