South Africa moved responsibility for early childhood development to the Department of Basic Education in 2022, and ECD centres and Grade R classes employ practitioners at several qualification levels.
Where nursery teachers work
Trained early-years staff work in early childhood development (ECD) centres, preschools, Grade R classes and independent schools.
Recognition and licensing
Teachers in South Africa register with the South African Council for Educators (SACE), and ECD practitioner qualifications sit on the national qualifications framework. An APTTI course is international professional development, not a SACE or NQF-registered qualification.
Studying from South Africa
Study is self-paced, so your time zone (SAST (UTC+2)) does not matter. Write assignments in English; languages used locally (English and other official languages) can be part of your teaching practice.
