How many hours a week should I study for an online NTT course?
Plan about 5 hours a week. APTTI's NTT Certificate (120 hours in 6 months), Diploma (200 hours in 10 months) and PG Diploma (240 hours in 12 months) all work out to roughly 5 hours weekly. That could be 45 minutes on weekdays plus an hour at the weekend.
What this means in practice
Regular short sessions help you remember more than occasional long ones. Leave extra time in weeks when assignments are due.
A sample weekly plan
- Monday to Thursday: 45 minutes reading or watching the module
- Friday: 30 minutes notes and reflection
- Saturday: 1 hour trying an activity with children or planning
- Sunday: 30 minutes catching up
Making study stick
Write one idea you will try in class after each session. Teach a rhyme or activity you learned to a child. Discuss what you learn with a colleague or friend.
Staying motivated
Set small goals such as finishing one topic a week, and reward yourself when you do. Tell a friend or colleague about your course so you have someone to share progress with.
Seeing children respond to a new rhyme or activity you learned is the best motivation, so try ideas quickly rather than saving them for later.
What to do next
- Calculate your total hours.
- Block study sessions in your calendar.
- Track progress weekly.
What to keep in mind
If life gets busy, tell your tutor early rather than falling far behind.
